ChatGPT for finance teams (2026)

What ChatGPT can actually do for an FP&A team today: the Excel add-in, which finance-system connectors are GA versus merely live, which plan unlocks write actions, and the governance details your controller will ask about.

Counts across the 12 systems in our connector tracker, verified 2026-10-19. "Live" means the vendor documents a working connection but doesn't call it GA.

1. ChatGPT for Excel

OpenAI launched the add-in in beta on March 5, 2026 and made ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets generally available across all plans on May 5, 2026 [1]. For FP&A, the pitch is:

  • Build and update models in plain language, "while preserving structure, formulas, and assumptions" [1].
  • Trace logic: explain why outputs changed and show how assumptions flow through a model, with answers linked to the exact cells referenced [1].
  • Permission before edits. "Before making changes to a workbook, ChatGPT asks for permission," and edits can be undone [1].

OpenAI's beta notes flagged that complex formulas and edge cases "may still require manual refinement" [1]. At beta launch, Enterprise and Edu workspaces had access off by default, enabled by admins per user or group [1]. Confirm with your admin whether that's still how your workspace is set up.

Three things worth flagging from the table:

  • GA is rarer than "live." Vena, NetSuite, Snowflake, Databricks and the Excel add-in are labeled GA by their vendors. Others work but don't make that commitment.
  • Datarails' connector cost is contested. Its technical doc calls the connector "a paid feature" requiring a FinanceOS AI connector subscription [4], while its pricing page lists the FinanceOS AI Connector on its plans [16]. Get it on the order form.
  • Databricks has a deadline. The old Genie Beta MCP endpoint is deprecated and "will be sunset on October 31, 2026." Move to the Genie One MCP before then [13].

3. Which ChatGPT plan you need

OpenAI's help center draws the lines [2][3]:

  • Full MCP, including write actions: ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu, on web. The help center's FAQ still refers to "full MCP beta" [2].
  • Pro: can connect custom MCP servers with read/fetch permissions [2]. Vendor docs such as Cube's also list Plus for their ChatGPT apps [5].
  • Who can add them: on Business, only admins and owners create and publish custom MCP connections. Enterprise/Edu admins can delegate via RBAC [2].
  • OpenAI-built apps are search-only and don't support write actions. Write needs a custom MCP server [2].
  • Deep research can use custom apps for read/fetch only [2]. Custom MCP isn't available on mobile [2].

4. Governance details your controller will ask about

  • Frozen tool snapshots. After an admin approves an MCP server, ChatGPT uses a "frozen" snapshot of its tools. Vendor changes don't apply until an admin refreshes, calls can error if definitions change, and admins aren't proactively notified [2].
  • Confirmation on writes. ChatGPT may ask before write actions, based on app permissions. Admins see risk warnings when enabling apps that write [2][3].
  • Audit trail. Conversations that use apps are available in the Compliance API for Enterprise/Edu [2].
  • Training. OpenAI says it doesn't use connector data to train models by default for Business, Enterprise and Edu. For Free, Plus, Go and Pro, it may if "Improve the model for everyone" is on [3].

5. Rollout checklist

  1. Start with read-only connectors (Datarails, Vena, Pigment default mode, Planful when it ships for ChatGPT).
  2. Use a Business or Enterprise workspace for anything touching company financials.
  3. Turn on write tools (NetSuite, QuickBooks, Cube) only for named users, and set app permissions to "Always ask."
  4. Assign an owner to refresh MCP tool snapshots after vendor updates.
  5. Confirm connector cost per vendor before rollout. Cube meters calls in AI credits [5].

FAQ

Is ChatGPT for Excel generally available?

Yes. OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Excel in beta on March 5, 2026 and said on May 5, 2026 that ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets are generally available across all plans. It asks permission before changing a workbook.

Can ChatGPT write data back into our finance systems?

Only through specific connectors. OpenAI says its own built apps are search-only, and full MCP support with write actions is limited to ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu. On the vendor side, NetSuite, QuickBooks and Cube document write actions and Pigment offers opt-in write tools; Datarails, Vena and Planful are read-only.

Which finance systems have official ChatGPT connectors?

Per our tracker: Datarails, Cube, Vena, Pigment, NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, Xero, Snowflake and Databricks document ChatGPT connections. Planful says ChatGPT is coming next. Anaplan's AI Gateway does not name ChatGPT.

Does OpenAI train on data from connected finance apps?

For ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu, OpenAI says it does not use information accessed from connectors to train models by default. For Free, Plus, Go and Pro, it may, if the "Improve the model for everyone" setting is on.
